It’s come to light that drivers could see standard £60 fines increase by almost 70% to £100, and those who go to court to challenge speeding tickets or for more serious driving offences could pay up to £120.
The fines for motorists come as part of a huge expansion in the Victims Surcharge scheme, which currently levies just £15 on top of fines issued by courts. The Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke now wants the scheme extending to all criminals, including those jailed for the most serious offences such as murder, but he also announced plans to expand it to fixed penalty notices meaning drivers will now also be targeted.
If two people were ever wrongly put in the same barrel, I think this is it: Murders and Speeders!
Almost every day I hear the same sentence when taking motor trade insurance quotes, “SP30, 3 points and a £60 fine”, I guess that might be soon to change. Luckily the amount you’re fined doesn’t actually alter the price of your motor trade quote here at Trade Plan Insurance.
Personally, I’m in two minds about this business: this is an obvious tax on drivers and a way to increase revenue, which I’m sure, will anger a lot of motorists. However an extra £40 on a fine you may only end up paying once or twice in your entire life isn’t worth getting into too much of a fuss over – I’m sure for most drivers out there the points themselves are more of an annoyance than the fine.
